an Internet break by choice

One of my friends from my internship class a few years back would often say, "no I took a technology break today, no Internet for me." I decided this was a much needed exercise for myself. I find myself obsessively checking things constantly online. You know that guy you kind of knew from a class you took 12 years ago, what is he doing? Well he is cooking dinner, right now! Courtesy of Facebook. I do not have cable, since I'm a student again, and it's not really a necessity. My dad couldn't believe it. He asked more than a few times when and if I was getting cable and could not fathom the idea I wasn't planning on purchasing service. Then again, my parents have their TVs on nonstop at the house it seems. I can't find the remote to my converter box thingy, so the channel remains on Channel 3 which is kinda sucky (some AZ local channel). However, no big deal. I like books, mags, and I had things to do.

I had to fight the urge to not look up numerous things. Does 360 run to Austin? (no it does not)...What are these many words I don't understand in the Virginia Woolf book I just checked out? Also, I check so many blogs, that I had to do without for one day. My general start up on the Mac includes a gmail check that often lasts a while, as many of my professors and supervisor send out many emails along with the research I'm doing; recently, it's our updated next week's meetings schedule along with updated TA assignments. Then, onto Facebook (rarely MySpace, as it's not as interesting anymore & a pain to navigate IMO), to my friends' blogs, then Ordinary Day, NPR's All Songs Considered, Carrie Brownstein's Monitor Mix, Seattle's KEXP Blog, and the Fast Food Blog. OK a bit much, but I like getting new music recs, one of my sister's friends writes for This Ordinary Day, and I don't watch hardly any TV.

Besides enjoying some great books by chick lit author Jennifer Weiner, & I finally checked out a book by Virginia Woolf, although I'm having a harder time getting into it as I imagined. I played my piano keyboard for a bit, had some quality Ava June time, cooked a delicious Mexican chicken/black bean dish, and I got to bed incredibly early. Probably too early, as I woke at 4 a.m. wide awake. I don't really have a life here in Arizona, so weekends are pretty boring, and the Internet is a much needed tool to keep in touch with the friends all over the nation. Still, an Internet break every now & again is probably not a bad idea!
