And the list goes on...

From working in the hospital as a clinical RD for over a year, I could create list after list of things that are super annoying. As for yesterday, the pharmacy manager phoned me asking about a TPN (total parenteral nutrition - or "nutrition in the veins" - not a feeding tube). Apparently a doc asked the pharmacist for recommendations to "maximize the fat kcals, minimize the CHO kcals." The pharmacist called, "I don't know why they don't take your recommendations; you wrote a recommendation yesterday. At other hospitals I've worked at, the doctors took the dietitians' recs; I don't know why they don't take advantage of your expertise." Yeah yeah...about 70% of the docs do NOT take the dietitian recs...so what is the point? Yes I ask this to myself every hour of every day.

Another irk - inpatient education as these poor folks are super doped up on whatever meds and just wanna get their rest. Yesterday, this lady was sooo lethargic, but being a Friday, I wanted to speak to her prior to her discharge. She then fell asleep as I was discussing the diabetes diet; I wasn't too concerned. Patients are sooo sleepy all throughout the day; it is rare that a patient is on no less than 6 medications at one time. No biggie. Later, I went back, and to my unfavor, the pt's hubby was there & had to be uber annoying. He continually interrupted and asked random crap questions about his own personal health. Oh well, whatever...the patient herself was kind and seemed to appreciate.

Inpatient education is so pointless! They should allow you to just give references to outpatient education options and they can follow up with it on their own time. No one remembers what is said in the hospital! But you already know this:)
